Causes of Adrenal Fatigue
Updated: May 17
The underlying cause of adrenal fatigue is chronic stress.
Your adrenal glands are responsible for the responses to the different types of stress that are placed upon your body, whether emotional stress, physical stress, or environmental stress.
Your adrenals produce the hormones that are needed to help maintain homoeostasis, however, when your body has been under stress for long periods of time, your adrenal glands have to work harder to keep up the demand placed upon them, in order to produce the hormones needed. While they are still functioning, there is a decreased output of hormones, and this is often because they have been over stimulated by working to keep up with your body's demands.
The bottom line is, that when your body is no longer able to find its equilibrium and recuperate due to excessive amounts of stress, adrenal fatigue ensues.
As mentioned earlier, there are different types of stress that have an effect on your body, and some of them are listed below:
- chronic stress
- long term illness
- chronic pain
- poor sleeping habits
- emotional trauma
- living with feelings of guilt
- living with feelings of fear
- chronic worry
- stress from broken relationships
- constant stress from a negative working environment
- living without hope
- exposure to toxins in your environment
- constantly pushing through your boundaries too often
These are just some of the causes behind adrenal fatigue, but anything that causes long-term stress can put you on the adrenal fatigue continuum.
Recognising your own limits within your own body is one of the best things you can do to avoid finding yourself in a place of adrenal exhaustion. When you feel stressed, take time out to relax and regroup. Don't try and push through and be a super hero to everyone in your orbit. This is a sure way to end up on the adrenal fatigue pathway.
Remember, your body is always wanting to return to homoeostasis (balance), and it will if you give it what it needs to do so.
Enjoy your journey to health and wellness.
