The End

It's hard to believe that we are at the other end of 2015. Where has the year gone? I guess that's a question that gets asked every year when we hit December. But it really is amazing how fast the years seem to go by.

We are all busy trying to live our lives the best way we know how....working our jobs, taking care of loved ones, staying on top of our emotions amidst the ever-increasing negative world events, and trying to keep ourselves healthy and fit. We do all this while still trying to find some alone time, where quietness and solitude call to us with the promise of peace for our weary minds and souls.

The end of year Christmas preparations, while being exciting and even fun, can also be a time of increased stress, and for some, a time of sadness and lonliness. The intensity of these emotions is often magnified at this time of year, causing the body to be flooded with high levels of stress hormones which can exacerbate the situation. This is where the pratice of mindfulness, or being present in the now, can really be of use to help prevent the escalation of the hormonal cascade.

When you are focussed on the present moment, it is impossible to be thinking of what you have to be doing in the future, or what you should have done yesterday. Focussing on being in the present is the best antidote to all the stresses that can take place in the lead up to Christmas, and it is probably the best strategy you can use to help keep your stress levels in check every day of the year.

So, I'd like to encourage you to take some time over the Christmas period to have some alone time in quietness.....read a lovely book that is written so well that it transports you to another place, away from your normal everyday life; do some meditation at the beach or beside a waterfall; listen to some instrumental music that you can lose yourself in....do something for yourself while giving thanks for your family and loved ones. Recharge your batteries so that when 2016 comes along, you're ready.

So, while it is the end of 2015, it can also be the beginning of a new phase in your health journey as you allow yourself to wind down and release the stress of the last 12 months, determing in your heart that 2016 will be your best year yet!
