Low Stomach Acid

In my last article, we looked at reflux and how and why it occurs. In case you didn't manage to read it, you can access it here. But just for a quick recap, reflux or GERD, is when the contents of your stomach backwash into your esophagus and cause pain and burning. There are different reasons for this to happen, but the one I want to focus on today, is low hydrochloric acid (HCl). HCl is necessary for a number of different actions in the stomach. It is responsible for the breakdown of proteins, the activation of different enzymes and hormones, and the protection against bacterial overgrowth in the gastrointestinal tract.
