Adrenal Fatigue/Burnout

Firstly, regarding the term "Adrenal Fatigue": this term has become popular because it describes so well, the symptoms that many people are experiencing in our busy 21st Century lifestyle. While it is technically not an accurate name, I will continue to use it because it is a term people are familiar with, and let's face it, trying to say, hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis dysfunction is really too much of a mouthful! So please, read on.

Adrenal Fatigue is a condition that occurs when your adrenal glands are functioning below their normal capacity, and is characterised by a collection of different signs and symptoms. It's a condition that lies between the two extremes of adrenal dysfunction -

Addison's Disease, (a rare endocrine disorder where a person cannot produce enough steroid hormones), and Cushing's Disease, (a disorder resulting in excess cortisol, often caused by a pituitary tumour).

Adrenal Fatigue most often occurs when someone has been living with chronic or intense stress. It can also occur after a prolonged illness.

Other factors that can contribute to Adrenal Fatigue include:

  • Having a "Type A" personality

  • Being "driven"

  • Feeling trapped or powerless in a situation in your life with no way out

  • "Pushing through" when you feel tired and exhausted

  • Not getting enough sleep/staying up too late at night - getting your 'second wind'

  • Certain life events e.g. emotional trauma; loss of a job

  • Lifestyle factors e.g. shift work; unhappy relationships

  • Chronic illness

  • Not getting enough rest and relaxation

All of these situations, either individually or together, can be the catalyst for Adrenal Fatigue.

What is Adrenal Fatigue?

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue?

Some of the signs and symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue are:

  • Feeling unrefreshed after a good night's sleep

  • Always feeling tired or fatigued, no matter how much sleep you've had

  • The need for coffee/caffeine in the morning to get you going

  • Difficulty focussing

  • Low sex drive

  • Always in a hurry - feeling like there's never enough time

  • Feeling like you have "butterflies" in your stomach all the time

  • Having a surge of energy and feeling more alert at night than during the day

  • Craving salty foods

  • Carbohydrate cravings e.g. chips, sugary foods, bread

  • Feeling "wired and tired"

This is not a complete list but may give you an indication of whether you need to seek further help.

Testing for Adrenal Fatigue
Symptom
Checker

As well as the thorough case taking questionnaire which is a part of your consultation, the specific test I use is called the DUTCH test. This advanced and comprehensive urine test offers the most comprehensive profile of adrenal hormones and sex hormones, as well as their metabolites.

As well as DUTCH hormone testing, Hair Mineral Analysis may be used to determine any involvement of toxic heavy metals contributing to the symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue.

  • Do you have that "butterflies in your stomach" feeling all the time?

  • Do you feel so overwhelmed that you find you can't even do your dishes or cook nourishing meals each day?

  • Do you always feel rushed and like you don't have enough time?

  • Are you waking up tired each morning and feeling unrefreshed, no matter how much sleep you've had?

  • Do you feel anxious and on edge all the time for no apparent reason?

  • Does your head spin with thoughts that keep going around and around?

  • Do you suffer from that early afternoon energy crash where you just have to have caffeine or chocolate?

  • Do you find it hard to go to sleep or stay asleep at night because your mind is racing and just won't stop?

If you have answered "Yes" to 3 or more of these questions, then it's possible that your adrenals are overworked and heading for Adrenal Fatigue.
